ATHENS – The new Archbishop of America, His Eminence Elpidophoros was honored on May 20 with the Marilena Laskaridis Award for Excellence in Maritime Culture and Helping the Hellenic Maritime Heritage and Tradition at the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation in Piraeus.
“I am happy to be among you, at such a special moment, to commemorate a lady who has left us physically but has left such achievement and legacy behind her,” His Eminence said of the late Marilena Laskaridis.
“Today I am before you as Archbishop of America and in this capacity I would like to talk to you about the superpowers we have. A great superpower we have is our culture and our language… The second superpower is you, our shipping industry. As Hellenism spreads all over the world, as far as it spreads, the more it excels, and the sea is a very attractive and fascinating destination for Hellenism, to develop its entrepreneurial activity and to develop this drive that it has inside it to conquer, to open up, to see new places and spread out. The third superpower is our Orthodoxy, which has shown even in the latest developments in our region that it has a momentum that no one should forget, no one should ignore, and whoever does ignore it makes a geostrategic error and is humbled.”
