ALCOTT, ELBENICKY
SYRACUSE, NY (from the Syracuse Post Standard, published on Apr. 2) – Elbenicky (Alexandrides) Alcott of Syracuse passed away peacefully on March 30, 20l9 at the age of 94. Born in Hoboken, NJ to Rita and Peter Alexandrides, immigrants from Greece, she was the third of their five children. The family moved several times, eventually settling in South Amboy, NJ, where her parents owned and operated a small diner. Her father died when she was 15 years old, leaving her mother to raise five children, who worked alongside their mother in the family’s diner. She graduated from Harold G. Hoffman High School and eventually moved with her family to Syracuse, where two of her brothers were attending Syracuse University. Her unique name was derived from the ancient Greek “Elpiniki,” joining “elpida,” Greek for hope, with “Niki/Nike,” the Goddess of strength and victory. She was often affectionately called “Elba” by her family and friends, for whom she always had a ready and warm smile. Elba married her husband, Willard “Red” Alcott, in 1952. The couple moved to East Brunswick, NJ, where Elba assumed a traditional role of homemaker. Red and Elba were active members of the community including, later in their lives, the East Brunswick Senior Citizens Club and St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. They were married for 56 years until his death in 2008. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brothers, Alex Alexandrides, former Mayor Lee Alexander, Christ “Steve” Alexander and her sister, Mary Voyadgis. Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Lee (Donna) of Syracuse and Alan of Liverpool, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. ANDREOU, APOSTOLOS
AUDUBON, NJ (from the Courier-Post, published on Apr. 4) – On March 31, Apostolos “Paul” Andreou passed away at Laurel Manor in Stratford. Born in Gelanthi, Greece, Paul immigrated first to Montreal, Canada before settling in Audubon, NJ where he has lived since 1978. Apostolos was predeceased by his wife, Polyxeni “Paula” Andreou. He is the devoted father of Lambros (Kelly) Andreou and Helen (Chris) Renna. He is the beloved grandfather of Melanie, Nicole, Stephanie (Daniel), and Jason. He is also lovingly survived by his sister, Thalia Thanos; his brothers, Steve and George Andreou along with many nieces and nephews in the United States, Canada, and Greece. CROWN POINT, IN (from the Northwest Indiana Times, published on Apr. 2) – Andriani Bozell, age 80, of Crown Point, passed away March 29. Andriani was an active member of St. Iakovos Greek Orthodox Church in Valparaiso. She enjoyed outdoor barbeques, going to the movies and dinner with family and friends. Andriani will be deeply missed. BRINIAS, FRANK
RIVERSIDE, CA (from the Press-Enterprise, published on Apr. 3) – With a heavy heart, we are sad to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Frank Theophanis Brinias on March 21, 2019 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 79. Frank was born in Kessari, Corinth Greece on September 14, 1939 and emigrated from Greece to Montreal, Canada at the age of 17. It was in Montreal where he met his wife Meni of 54 years. They welcomed their first daughter Nancy while they lived in Montreal and shortly after moved to Burlington, Vermont. After a brief stay in Vermont, Frank decided to move the family to Southern California in 1969. They purchased their first home and settled their family in Arcadia, California and eventually expanded their family and welcomed their second daughter Maria. In 1984 they moved to Riverside, California. Frank was in the restaurant business for over 48 years. Starting in Canada and eventually taking his love of food to Southern California. Frank was extremely hardworking, and carried two jobs while he lived in Los Angeles. In 1978 Frank opened a coffee shop in Riverside named The Wishbone Restaurant. The Wishbone or “The Bone” was a popular stop and welcoming atmosphere for his customers, especially the students at UCR! His employees and regulars were always treated like family and they loved him equally. Eventually, the restaurant was renamed to Frank’s Bar and Grill. Frank always treated people well and created memorable times with both his food and his cocktails. He was always there ready to greet you with a smile and a story. In 2005 Frank sold his business and retired, he was a good family man, kind, and proud of his Greek heritage. When he wasn’t in the kitchen, Frank enjoyed his time with his family and friends. He took pride in his organic garden and keeping all of his guests well fed. A 35-year resident of Riverside, California, Frank is survived by his wife Meni Brinias of Riverside, CA, two daughters, Nancy Aplin (Reese) of Redlands, CA, Maria Gregg (Brooks) of El Cajon, CA, two grandchildren, Hannah and Gabriel Gregg of El Cajon, CA, as well as his older siblings, Vlassi Brinias (Maria) of Kiato, Corinth, Greece, Costas Brinias (Voula) of Knoxville, TN, Vivian Captain (George) of Knoxville, TN and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Greece. Frank will be missed by his countless friends and family members around the world. Services were held at Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church.

BIRMINGHAM, AL (from The Birmingham News, published on Apr. 5) – Aleck Choraitis, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2 at his home in Birmingham, AL with his family at his bedside. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Penny Choraitis of Birmingham, AL; his daughter Vicki Choraitis (Birmingham, AL); his sister Anna Anagnostopoulou (Athens, Greece); his brother Kostas (Maria) Horaitis (Chicago, IL); his son-in-law Jim Morris (Panama City Beach, FL); 9 Grandchildren: Jim (Ashly) Morris; Bonnie (Chris) Cerniglia; Nick (Kristin) Morris; Penny (Sean) Dickson; Aleck (Katie) Choraitis; Anne (Greg) Arrington; Alex (Adri) Morris; Cameron Latty; Summer Choraitis; and 15 Great Grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his daughter Anastasia (Anne) Morris (Panama City Beach, FL); his son Chris Choraitis (Panama City Beach, FL); his brother Nickos Horaitis (Gargalianoi, Greece); his sister Pope Sorra (Athens, Greece); and great-grandson Joseph Taylor Goodman (Birmingham, AL). Aleck was born on April 1, 1935 in Gargalianoi, Greece. He graduated from Academia in Greece with a degree in education with hopes of becoming a teacher one day. He married the love of his life on February 4, 1957 and moved to the USA later that year. He worked as a chef at The Gold Nugget of Homewood, AL until the opening of Andrews BBQ. He was the owner, operator, and entrepreneur of Andrews BBQ on 1st Avenue North from 1969-2004. Aleck and his wife worked very hard to build their restaurant, as well as their other business, the Sunset Inn in Panama City Beach, FL. Aleck enjoyed spending time with his family, watching sports; especially, Alabama football, gardening (he loved watering his flowers), attending the Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and most of all was known for his generosity and passion for helping people. He carried himself through life with a smile, and a lively spirit. Services were held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Birmingham. May his memory be eternal.
COLITSAS, CHRISTINE
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ (from the Home News Tribune, published on Apr. 4) – Christine Colitsas, 90, of East Brunswick, passed away on Tuesday, April 2 at Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center. Born in Athens, Greece, Mrs. Colitsas was a war bride who immigrated to the United States with her husband at the age of 17. Predeceased by her daughter, Aspasia; she is survived by her husband, James Colitsas; her son, Thomas (Nancy) Colitsas; her four grandchildren, James (Maya), Michelle (Scott), Anthony (Kim), Christine (Neil); and her six great-grandchildren, Tommy, Abby, Isabella, Sawyer, Emily and Alexander. The funeral was held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Piscataway, NJ.
