NEW YORK – The Cathedral School received a visit from the Mayor of Athens on September 21.
Middle school students had a unique opportunity to hear from Kaminis about pressing global issues facing world leaders today.
Among the issues discussed were the migration crisis and the complex response to an unprecedented series of humanitarian emergencies in recent years.
The mayor, in New York attending the UN summit on Refugees and Migrants, visited the schoo to answer questions from students and provide a global perspective on the growing crisis. Mayor Kaminis explained the ways in which Greece provides aid to refugees coming into the country, many of whom are children.
Kristine Cecere, Head of School, expressed her gratitude to the mayor for his visit. She said “discussions like these lie at the very heart of what we learn at The Cathedral School. We need to continue to challenge ourselves to think outside of our own world and to consider ways in which we can make a positive impact on the lives of others.”
The school has more than 65 years of experience in educating young students. It offers a rigorous academic education in a small and supportive learning environment.
With a low student-teacher ratio, an international student body and placement of graduates in the city’s best high schools, The Cathedral School continues its legacy of preparing children for the complexities and challenges of the world beyond school.
Kaminis was born in New York City where his father was working at the time. At age 5, he moved to Athens with his family. Kaminis holds dual American and Greek citizenship.
He studied law at the University of Athens and undertook postgraduate studies in public law at Panthéon-Assas University, earning a MAS in 1982, then attended the Pantheon-Sorbonne University, where he received a doctorat d’État en droit in 1989.
Kaminis was elected Mayor of Athens in 2010 after a second round of local elections. He ran as an independent and was reelected in 2014 after defeating SYRIZA-supported Gabriel Sakellaridis in the second round of elections. His term ends in 2019.
