NEW YORK– On the afternoon of August 12, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (NYSDTF) returned the keys to the owner of Euro Market, allowing the Greek supermarket to reopen after its brief closure due to unpaid New York State sales taxes. As reported in the National Herald, the supermarket was closed on August 10, seized by NYSDTF for the unpaid taxes. NYSDTF Assistant Public Information Officer James Gazzale spoke with the National Herald and said “We returned the keys late Friday afternoon in order to reopen the business.” When asked if the issue was resolved, Gazzale pointed out that once the warrant is removed and the keys returned, the case becomes a private matter and details of the case cannot be divulged.

In an interview with the National Herald, the owner of Euro Market, Panagiotis Menikos, said that the store reopened on Friday night.

Asked about the outpouring of concern from his customers, Menikos said it was “great” and “touching.” “From the moment we reopened Euro Market, the public concern surrounded us with love.”

Euro Market is located at 30-46 31st Street in Astoria and is adjacent to the parking lot of the Cathedral of St. Demetrios of Astoria. The store is frequented by expatriates and other Astoria residents who prefer Greek and other European products.

Menikos pointed out that Euro Market is one of the established Greek shops of Astoria.

“Euro Market opened in 2004 and for the last 12 years regularly serves the needs of expatriates and other residents of Astoria,” he said.

At the same time, Menikos noted that the clientele of Euro Market also includes expatriates from Long Island, Manhattan, and other areas of New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey who “come to the store for a great selection of Greek and European products and competitive prices.”

“Thank you to all the expatriates and Astoria residents for their support for us all these years,” Menikos concluded.
