READING, PA – The community of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church celebrated Great and Holy Friday on April 29, as did the rest of the Orthodox world. While every church has its charm, there are a number of things that make this community shine.
Not least of which is a true feeling of community – a Christian community, not a business. “How much are the lampades (the candles and plastic cups to protect the flame from blowing out, which we will hold as we chant the Lamentations outdoors following the Epitaph)?” The answer is: “It’s a donation – give anything you like.”
Next, there is the order and respect of the congregation as it follow the Epitaph outdoors. No chattering, no cellphones, just a respectful and quiet procession.
This church is a wonderful example that many, many others should follow.
