The University of Athens’ medical school on Friday honored noted Greek-American medical professor, researcher and pediatrician Stella Kourembanas.
Dr. Kourembanas, who emigrated from Greece with her family to the United States at the age of six, is the Clement A. Smith professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and the chief of the division of newborn medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital.
The university’s iconic main event hall filled with many of the esteemed Greek-American researcher’s colleagues, friends and well-wishers.
She emphasized that she feels that she has realized a dream in returning to be honored in Greece, in comments to TNH, whose Greek-language edition, she said, is read daily in her Boston home.
Her husband, Dr. Alexandros Mitsialis, who is also a Harvard medical professor, said that of all the many honors and distinctions awarded to his wife over the years, “this honor by Greece is special, because it speaks to her heart.”
