TARPON SPRINGS, FL – Tarpon Springs is the most Greek-populated city, per capita, in the United States, and its Greek culture is what makes the Gulf Coast Florida city a national tourist attraction. But there is also a large African-American population in Tarpon.
While the Greeks dominate most of the cultural and historical celebrations, such as the annual EPIPHANY DAY CROSS DIVE on January 6 and the GREEK INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE in March, the event most notably celebrated by Tarpon’s African-American community is the annual MARTIN LUTHER KING PARADE, held on or around that iconic civil right leader’s birthday each January.
This year, the parade was held on January 16 proceeding on two of Tarpon’s main thoroughfares, Tarpon Avenue and, appropriately, Martin Luther King Boulevard. Leading the parade were Tarpon Springs MAYOR DAVID ARCHIE, who is the city’s first African-American mayor, and CHRIS ALAHOUZOS, who was born in Kalymnos and is a former Tarpon Commissioner and Vice Mayor. If elected in March, Alahouzos will become Tarpon’s first Greek-born mayor.
Immediately following the Parade, a celebration ensued, with food, beverages, and live music, at DORSETT PARK in the heart of the city’s African-American community.
The Parade was organized by the MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. SCHOLARSHIP AND EVENTS FOUNDATION OF TARPON SPRINGS.
