NEW YORK – Father John Romas, the presiding priest of the historic Church of St. Nicholas that was destroyed on that terrible day – September 11, 2001 – has passed away. His death on Sunday morning, January 24 plunged into mourning his family, the community of St. Nicholas, as well as the community of the Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helen in Brooklyn which has been his parish’s temporary home for the past 14 years.
Fr. John Lardas, the Dean of Saints Constantine and Helen Cathedral, was among the first to learn the sad news. He informed the director of the parish’s Argyrios Fantis day school Maria Zolotas, and the president and members of the parish council.
The details of the funeral have not yet been settled.
Zolotas spoke with The National Herald and expressed her sorrow over the death of Fr. John and among other things said: “We express sincere and heartfelt condolences. His death has deeply touched the teachers, parents and students, as Fr. John had stolen their hearts. Wherever he was, he talked about the historic Church that was destroyed and the efforts to build the new one. We regret that he succumbed to disease and was unable to realize his dream of being present for the inauguration of the new Church. “
