ANSONIA, CT – On May 4, a bust of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., sculpted by Vasil Rakaj, an Albanian immigrant, was unveiled at City Hall in Ansonia, CT. Past Supreme Counselor of AHEPA and President of the Hellenic Bar Association of Connecticut Gregory J. Stamos and his granddaughter Parelea were among the nearly 300 people present.

Stamos was one of the speakers at the event and told The National Herald, “I today had the honor of participating in an unveiling of a bust of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King and a ceremony honoring his legacy at City Hall in Ansonia, CT. I was asked by the Committee to share the connection between Dr. King and His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos of blessed memory, and the courage and leadership in civil rights demonstrated by His Eminence at the seminal Selma March of March, 1965. The participation of His Eminence at that March, side by side with Dr. King, was cited as an example of people crossing artificial barriers and of reaching out a loving hand to all peoples.”

He added that “I also shared the experience of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios leading the only prayer on the Edmund Pettiis Bridge in Selma, Alabama, in March 2015, on the 50th anniversary of the 1965 [Selma] march, with Presidents Obama and Bush and members of Congress [in attendance].”
