NEW YORK – Titan America’s Essex Cement Company and Corona Ready-Mix will donate all the concrete required for the construction of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Shrine at the World Trade Center.
Essex will be donating roughly 250 tons of cement for the project with an estimated value of $100,000. In partnership with Corona Ready-Mix, the only Greek-owned concrete producer in the NY Metro area, Essex will also produce the concrete. Corona also agreed to donate the remaining cost of the production and delivery of the concrete to the project, a value of approximately $125,000.
“Titan has a long history of dedication to corporate social responsibility, and it’s a great honor for us to be involved with Saint Nicholas National Shrine,” said Titan CEO Bill Zarkalis. “The Shrine will not only be a valuable asset to the greater New York Greek community but it will be a national treasure for future generations. We also wish to recognize Corona Ready-Mix for their generosity and thank them for partnering with us on this endeavor.
Titan America and Corona Ready-Mix join a number of firms that have expressed their support for the vision of the Archdiocese and the parish for the historic site to be a “place of pilgrimage for the entire world.”
P.J. Mechanical, whose president and founder is Peter J. Pappas, has donated all the heating and air conditioning apparatus. Venus Marble Group, whose president and owner is Vangelis Mazidzoglou, has donated marble from Mount Pentelikon, the source of the Parthenon’s marble, for the new Church’s translucent outer shell.
Brian Cury, the founder and CEO of EarthCam whose father is Syrian Orthodox Christian, has donated the equipment that will document the historic endeavor and provides live feeds, which will continue after the Church’s completion.
Live coverage of the construction is available at stnicholaswtc.org/webcam, and on smartphones and tablets. The “Earthcam” app can be downloaded on the App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded, viewers can scroll down or search for “Saint Nicholas National Shrine” and watch the rebuilding effort live.
Architect Santiago Calatrava was chosen by a committee of lay and clergy leaders to design the Shrine. Calatrava’s design is reminiscent of the Byzantine architecture of Constantinople’s Hagia Sophia.
