BOSTON – OXI Day was honored in Boston three days early, on Sunday, Oct. 25 at the Maliotis Cultural Center. The event organized by the Federation of the Hellenic-American Societies of New England.
The opening prayer was offered by His eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston. The choir of Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (HCHC) under the direction of Grammenos Karanos sang the National Anthems of Greece and the U.S. the hymn of the Holy Protection of the Mother of God.
Federation President Vasilios Kafkas and Consul General of Greece Ifigenia Kanaras offered greetings.
The keynote address was given by Konstantinos Lavdas, Professor of Hellenic and European Studies at the Constantine Karamanlis Chair of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. His topic was “An Anniversary of Liberty in an Age of Heightened Responsibilities.”
Students of Greek schools as well as the Day School of Lowell recited poems related to the OXI Day, the flag, and the heroes of 1940.The Metropolis of Boston Youth Dance Group, as well as the Dance group Panagia Soumela and the Sons and Daughters of Alexander the Great danced traditional dances from various parts of Greece.
Metropolitan Methodios closed the program, and a reception followed.
