BOSTON.-The economic situation of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America is much more serious than it was thought before. The National Herald has learned from within the recent the meeting of the Archdiocesan Council that the deficit actually is $12,750,000 million dollars.
A transfer of $4,750.00 million was made from the restricted accounts of St. Nicholas to the general operating accounts of the Archdiocese. There is also another $5.0 million deficit since checks have been issued waiting in a box at the Archdiocese to be mailed out for bill payments but there are no funds in the bank.
Also there is a problem with the pension of the priests of about $3.0 million dollars.
More than 30 personnel was fired that cost in salaries and benefits more than $6.5 million per year.
The next Clergy Laity Congress of the Archdiocese will be convened in Boston in July of 2018. George Behrakis the prominent Greek-American businessman and great benefactor of the Archdiocese, the Metropolis of Boston, the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the Greek-American Community strongly opposed the convening of the Clergy laity in Boston because there is no enough time for the preparation and the refused to chair it despite the pleas by Archbishop Demetrios.
