Don’t Miss The National Herald’s First-Ever Extensive Poll On Greece

With Greece in crisis again, the National Herald gave Greeks a chance to give their opinions about what the Sept. 20 election will bring and other critical issues for the country’s future.

This significant survey was the first ever commissioned by a Greek-American newspaper, in cooperation with top pollster GPO.

Greeks are voting for the fifth time in six years for a leader in what is the most sharply-divided contest yet, with analysts expecting a Grand Coalition of as many as four or five parties.

Former Premier and Radical Left SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras resigned on Aug. 20, seven months after failing to meet his previous campaign promises to reverse austerity.

Tsipras stepped down in a bid to shed his party of its most radical element, the Left Platform, led by former energy minister Panagiotis Lafazanis, who accused him of betraying pledges to reverse pay cuts, slashed pensions, worker firings, privatizations and cut taxes.

Lafazanis’ Popular Unity could take away enough of SYRIZA’s vote to bring back the party it deposed in January – the New Democracy Conservatives who are also pro-austerity, amid expectations whomever wins will have no choice but to follow the same path after international lenders agreed to give Greece a third bailout of 86 billion euros ($95.55 billion) but only in return for more tough reforms.

With so much at stake, the poll asked respondents three questions:

  • How will the Greeks vote in the upcoming election?
  • What do they think about the role the U.S. has played during the crisis?
  • If they were to leave Greece, to which country would they prefer to immigrate?

Don’t miss the results that will be posted on our website www.thenationalherald.com late on the afternoon of Sept. 4, and will also be published in our weekend Greek edition – Ethnikos Kyrix.
