NEW YORK – The Republican mayoral hopefuls New York State Assemblymember Nicole Malliotakis and Paul J. Massey Jr. spoke at a gathering of Republican Party members in Midtown Manhattan with the image of President Trump and first lady Melania projected on the wall behind them.
Malliotakis, as reported in the New York Times, is trying to distance herself from Trump though she voted for him, while appealing to Democratic voters and continuing her “aggressive opposition” to Mayor Bill de Blasio, especially for his policies on immigration and public safety.
She noted her roots in the middle class as opposed to millionaire real estate sales executive Massey who is doing well raising funds for his campaign.
“I want to be judged for me,” Malliotakis said after the event, as reported by the Times.
Greek-American Malliotakis would be the only woman running and local officials believed she might be the first woman ever to run for mayor of New York City as a Republican.
Malliotakis has challenged current Mayor Bill de Blasio on undocumented immigrants, saying the city has gone too far in protecting those accused of low-level crimes from deportation. She is one of two state lawmakers from Staten Island who filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the city’s destruction of documents used to verify a person’s identity in the obtaining of an IDNYC card, which is issued by the city’s municipal identification program, the Times reported.
