BOSTON, MA – Under an all-blue New England sky and plenty of sunshine, Hellenic College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology (HCHC) held its 75th commencement on May 20, presided by His Eminence Archbishop Geron Demetrios of America.
Hellenic College graduated 18 students and Holy Cross 34, of which 22 received the master of divinity degree, 9 master of theological studies and 3 master of theology. The MDiv is for those who are planning to enter the Holy Priesthood.
Also, honorary doctorates were awarded, in humanitiesto entrepreneur and philanthropist George Logothetis and in divinity to Fr. George Poulos, a 1948 graduate of Holy Cross Seminary in Pomfret, CT.
Logothetis is chairman and CEO of Libra Group, an international diverse company comprised of 30 subsidiaries in 35 countries on six continents.
Poulos, described as “legendary” by Archbishop Demetrios, is retried priest of Church of the Archangels in Stamford, CT, where he actively served for 53 years and, at age 95, still continues to have office hours at the church.
Poulos unable to attend in person. Fr. Steven Zorzos from the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Washington, DC, who was an altar boy under Poulos, accepted the degree on Poulos’ behalf.
Following the singing of the Greek and American National anthems by the Holy Cross St. Romanos the Melodist Byzantine Choir, President Rev. Christopher Metropulos welcomed the hundreds of attendees. Greetings also were offered by National Philoptochos First Vice President Jeannie Ranglas and Archdiocesan Council Vice President and Leadership 100 Chairman George S. Tsandikos.
In the morning, Demetrios presided over the archierarchical Divine Liturgy at Holy Cross Chapel and chanted a 40-day memorial for the repose of Christine Karavitis,a former HCHC treasurer.
Also present were Metropolitans Methodios of Boston, Gerasimos of San Francisco (who was honored the previous evening at HCHC’s Graduating Classes Dinner), Savas of Pittsburgh and Bishop Elias of Filomilion of the Albanian Orthodox Diocese.
Demetrios concluded with exhortatory remarks highlighting three components of the school’s significance to the students: education, faith, and Hellenism. The Board of Trustees held their meeting on May 18 and 19.
