BILOXI, MS – His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of the Metropolis of Atlanta will attend the golden anniversary celebration at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 255 Beauvoir Road in Biloxi this weekend May 20 and 21. The community is celebrating 50 years with a Golden Gala Celebration, Hierarchical Divine Liturgy, and a Grand Luncheon Banquet during which His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios will make a speech. The entertainment at the event will include Russian dancers and singers.
“Created to serve as a spiritual home for military families serving their country at Keesler Air Force Base, where many of the Orthodox families attended liturgy,” a press release noted, Holy Trinity was founded in 1967. At that time, Lt. Col. Father Michael Margitich, an Orthodox Air Force chaplain informed the Coast’s Greek Orthodox community that the US Air Force was about to demolish a chapel and build a new one.
The chapel was rescued from demolition through persuading the contractor to give it to the Orthodox community who paid for it to be transported in four sections to a new location where it has been ever since. The land was donated by Will Rich for the church which began as a mission chapel for Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in New Orleans. Receiving its charter in 1983 from the Metropolis of Atlanta, Biloxi’s Holy Trinity was consecrated in 2014 during Metropolitan Alexios’ visit to the Mississippi Coast.
The church serves all nationalities of the Orthodox faithful on the Gulf Coast including Greeks, Russians, Ukrainians, Georgians, Belorussians, and Romanians, among others. The traditional foods of a dozen countries are available at Holy Trinity’s annual Christmas Festival and Pastry Sale.
