WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12), Co-Chair and Co–Founder of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, met with the Hellenic women’s philanthropic group Daughters of Penelope on December 8 to discuss its work and meet the new Grand President, Jan Spanos.

“I was so pleased to hear from the Daughters of Penelope and its Grand President, Jan Spanos, today to discuss issues that are important to the Hellenic American community. I look forward to working with the group on causes I have championed for many years, including family leave for the birth of the child, an increased childcare tax credit, and returning the Parthenon Marbles to their rightful home in Athens, Greece. These are issues that we must continue to make national priorities.

“During our meeting, we also had the opportunity to discuss the Daughters of Penelope’s recent trip to Athens in which they saw firsthand the adverse effects of the ongoing economic crisis, particularly on children and families.

“I will continue to advocate for our country’s support for Greece as they work to rebound economically. I am proud that this year we were able to work with the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) so that the agency is now open to reviewing proposals for projects in Greece. This is just one avenue through which we can increase investment in Greece and I will continue to explore other ways the U.S. Government can support the Greek economic recovery.”

Congresswoman Maloney represents one of the largest Hellenic communities in the United States and outside of Greece and Cyprus. As the Caucus’ co-Chair and co-Founder, Maloney continues to work for the issues that concern the community.

First created in 1995, the Caucus is a bipartisan group of concerned Members of Congress working to foster and improve relations among the United States, Greece, and Cyprus. The Caucus brings congressional attention to key diplomatic, military, and human rights issues in a critical part of the world.

The objectives of the Daughters of Penelope are to promote Hellenism, Education, Philanthropy, Civic Responsibility, and Family & Individual Excellence.

It is a leader in philanthropic, educational, and cultural activities with local chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, and Cyprus.
