ASTORIA, N.Y. – The New York City Parks Department is holding a workshop on November 16 about Astoria Park, as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Anchor Park program.
The Astoria Park Community Visioning Meeting takes place from 7–9 pm at Bohemian Hall, 2919 24th Avenue in Astoria.
NYC Parks is investing $30 million to transform Astoria Park. Large parks are important because of the variety of things they offer the neighborhood. The fields, play areas, natural features, and many other amenities help to “anchor” neighborhoods.
According to NYC Parks, big decisions will be made about Astoria Park, and the public is invited to share their ideas and be a part of shaping the park’s future. NYC Parks urges the public to attend the community visioning meeting.
The parks department flyer in English and in Greek notes that the meetings will have refreshments and kids activities.
Council Member Costa Constantinides said, “the Anchor Park $30 million investment for Astoria Park will transform our neighborhood’s vital greenspace. The funding will bring historic improvements to the playing fields, playgrounds, and lawns. This workshop is an opportunity for residents to share their ideas on how the $30 million allocation can improve the park’s use-of-space to benefit all Astorians.
“It is also an integral first step in the capital project process – the design and construction phases will not begin until after public input is heard. We encourage our community to bring friends and to spread the word about this workshop. We look forward to hearing everyone’s ideas. I thank the Parks Department and Mayor de Blasio for their partnership on this historic allocation.”
The Anchor Park program provides funding to five large New York City parks that serve as centers of activity for the surrounding neighborhoods.
