NEW YORK—The Kat’s Ribbon of Hope Foundation (KROH) hosted its 4th Annual Golf & Tennis Outing and Benefit Dinner on October 13 at Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, NY. Held during Breast Cancer Awareness month (October), the event raised about $375,000. All proceeds benefit breast cancer research at Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center, the Feinstein Institute of Northwell Health LIJ and Patient Navigation at Adelphi Women’s Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Center on Long Island.
The day’s events began with golf and tennis at Nassau Country Club followed by a benefit dinner and silent auction. Guest speakers included the MC of the event WNBC reporter Lynda Baquero, keynote speaker Dr. Annette Lee of Northwell Health, and Dr. Neil Iyengar of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Lee will receive a grant from KROH for breast cancer research for the next three years, and Dr. Iyengar’s research is also supported by KROH. Among the 400 guests who attended the event were cancer survivor and Founder of KROH Katerina Dinas Raptis, Dr. and Mrs. Sotirios Stergiopoulos, and Dr. Eleni Andreopoulou of the Breast Cancer Center of Weill Cornell.
KROH’s Co-Founders and Chairmen Despina Yarian and George Raptis- husband of Katerina, welcomed the guests to the spectacular evening. Yarian and Raptis thanked the event committee for their “tireless dedication” and thanked all in attendance “from the bottom of our hearts for your support and love and for empowering us to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.”
According to BreastCancer.org, about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime; 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history. While the number of deaths has been decreasing since 1989— thought to be the result of treatment advances, early detection through screening, and increased awareness—the fight is not over. As noted in the news release, it is Kat’s Ribbon of Hope’s mission to help in this fight by providing financial support to charitable organizations conducting breast cancer research and patient navigation, and to raise awareness for early detection.
